The outdoor recreation economy accounted for $454 billion of U.S. GDP in 2021
Participation in outdoor recreation grew 2.3% in 2022, recording over 168 million participants, or 55% of the U.S. population ages six and older.
80% of outdoor activity categories experienced participation growth in 2022. Large categories like camping, hiking, fishing, and biking, increased by over 20%.
Participation in outdoor recreation became more diverse in 2022. Increases were seen across Black, Hispanic, and LBGTQIA+ people.
Each year, 34.9 MILLION people travel and stay overnight to participate in amateur sports events.
